The NYC Department of Small Business Services is sponsoring a series of free entrepreneurial training courses for minority and women-owned business in the five boroughs of New York. Known as FastTrac®, the series features courses aimed at both emerging and established businesses with the goal of helping them reach their next level of success. FastTrac® courses have been instrumental in helping over 4,000 NYC entrepreneurs launch or expand their businesses since 2009.
The FastTrac® series is broken down into several focused categories. Those currently accepting applications include:
FastTrac® NewVenture™ & FastTrac®NewVenture for the Female Entrepreneur
These are 10-session courses that prepare recently established entrepreneurs to launch business in New York. Participants receive guidance from business experts, facilitators, and a network of experienced peers with the goal of learning:
- The fundamentals of entrepreneurship
- The basic components of a strong business plan
- The essentials of launching a successful and profitable business
The next round of NewVenture Classes will be held at the NYC Department of Small Business Services, located at 110 William Street, New York, NY. Classes will meet from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 20, May 22, May 29, June 3, June 5, June 10, June 12, June 17, June 19, and June 24.

FastTrac®NewVenture for the Female Entrepreneur also focuses on the unique challenges that women in business face. At present, there is no class schedule set for this course.
To be eligible for either of these FastTrac® courses, applicants must:
- Have a specific business idea or a newly established business
- Have completed initial market research for the business, determined the cost of the product or service, and identified target customers.
- Have a minimum of two years work experience
FastTrac®GrowthVenture is an 8-session training program focused on the challenges faced by established entrepreneurs. The program helps minority and woman business owners:
- Analyze their current business model
- Build on their existing products and services
- Increase profitability
- Create an action plan for future growth
To be eligible, you must own an established business that has been in operation for a minimum of one year. You must also be able to demonstrate the market potential of your product or service.
The next FastTrac® GrowthVenture course will be held at the Business and Career Center at the Brooklyn Public Library, located at 10 Army Street, Brooklyn, NY. Classes will convene from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on June 3, June 5, June 10, June 12, June 17, June 19, June 24 and June 26.

This course focuses on helping emerging entrepreneurs develop an understanding of the fundamentals of launching a business in the technology field. Eligibility requirements are the same as those for the courses NewVenture and NewVenture for Female Entrepreneurs. The current program is now in session, but applications are still being accepted for the classes that remain.

FastTrac® NewVenture™ for Veterans
This course is geared towards veterans of the U.S. Armed Services with the goal of helping them use the skills they learned during their military service to launch a profitable business. Applicants must have served at least one day of active military duty, including including the Reserves and National Guard, and have been in business of at least one year. The owner must also be able to demonstrate the market potential of the product or service being sold.

FastTrac® GrowthVenture™ for Established Neighborhood Businesses
Developed for owners of established small businesses that have been in operation for five years or more, this course focuses on the challenges most associated with long-standing businesses, such as
- Increasing sales and profitability
- Recruitment and retention
- Developing an exit plan
- Negotiating a commercial lease
The FastTrac® GrowthVenture™ for Established Neighborhood Businesses is currently not accepting applications. Check back periodically on the NYC Business FastTrac page to learn when the course may be avialable again.
