NYC Training Programs for MWBEs

The Mayor’s Office of Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises is the agency that provides minority and women business owners greater access to business opportunities within the City of New York. In addition to helping MWBEs secure certification and access to city contracts, the agency provides education and outreach to help minority and women business owners succeed. From one-on-one mentoring to interactive workshops, these training programs are available to any NYC-certified MWBE. 

Below we’ve put together a short list of learning opportunities that are most applicable to MWBE construction companies. In the coming weeks, we will discuss state and city training programs for other types of firms who do business in New York.

NYC Construction Mentorship

The NYC Construction Mentorship program is a free, four-month long training program offered by the New York City Department of Small Business Services. All participants receive an initial business needs assessment to help identify areas for improvement and one-on-one mentoring from an experienced MWBE construction firm. You will also receive specialized training on navigating NYC contracting opportunities and bidding on city contracts, as well as help in developing a customized three-year growth plan to help your business succeed.

To be eligible for the program, you must:

  • Be the owner of of a NYC-certified MWBE construction of trade firm. Architects, engineering firms and other construction-related businesses may also apply.
  • Be in operation for at least two years
  • Have annual revenues of at least $150,000

 

Additionally, you must submit a business plan, growth plan, and a company profile and/or capabilities statement in order to qualify.

Bond Readiness Program

The NYC Bond Readiness Program is a three-month long, intensive training program that helps small construction firms obtain surety bonds and access to larger contracts. Participants learn about the surety bonding process and gain access to a network of surety companies in New York. Additionally, you will receive one-on-one guidance on the kinds of financial management practices that enhance credibility and help you  qualify for bonding or increased bonding.

To be eligible for the program, you must be a NYC certified-MWBE in construction or a related trade and be in business for at least two years. Annual revenues of at least $200,000 are also required and you will need to submit a company profile and/or capabilities statement to qualify.

Selling to Government

Although not limited to businesses in the construction trades, these classes and workshops can help construction MWBEs understand the basics of government contracts and hone their skills in marketing and responding to bids.
